Embu University is one of the public universities in Kenya that have experienced significant transformations over the last few years. It offers a variety of courses for students to enroll since interests are diverse and students go for what suits them. They offer programs from the certificate to Ph.D. levels. Embu University started out as Embu agricultural staff training college, which was established in 1947 to offer pre-service training for Kenya African Preliminary Examination students. Initially, students only graduated with a certificate. It became Embu institute of Agriculture in 1968 when it began accepting students with secondary school certificate and taking them through a two years certificate training program.

It later rose to become an agricultural staff training college in 1990 and was mandated to implement to create short technical as well as management courses. The institution was also charged with the task of researching and providing consultation services meant to help bring significant enhancements in the agricultural sector. This remained its core purpose until June 2011 when it was upgraded to become Embu University College, and former president Mwai Kibaki inaugurated a council. The upgrading of the college was meant to improve researching the agribusiness, agriculture, horticulture, veterinary and forestry sectors just to mention a few.
